A reference amplifier is an amplifier next to a (theoretically) perfectly flat response, meaning it will amplify adjectives frequencies equally. This is preferably for studio work, since when monitoring you should have as little eq as possible to get the most accurate doll of your mix.
That said, you can use it, you will probably want to put some signal processing in front of it. I've used a reference amplifier for stage work, I be using some multifx... a Behringer V Amp Pro?
