the legs and core? Something small, rather compact would be perfect. What do you recommend?

How compact? If you can afford it and own the space, I am personally fond of pilates machines or elliptical machines. Pilates machines work every muscle of your body while helping you gain strength and be leaner lacking bulking up. Elliptical machines are better way of getting your cardio compared to tredmills because they are easier to burn calories and less stressful on your knees.

If not, prescription balls, pilates balls, or resistance band are great.
Medicine balls can be used for your stomach. Have you heard of the Bender Ball? Well a medication ball is just alike. There are also sand medicine balls, which is essentially what a Bender Ball is. Pilates ball are great for your abs. You can work your core by doing more than just sit ups on them. If you do a little research you'll find something. Finally, resistance ban are great for your arms. They have the same effect as pilates machines. They tone you lacking bulking you. You can also tie them to make some exercises for leg resistance.
