Why do golfers spend $1000's of dollars on equipment but won't spend a $100 on a lesson?
The lesson will improve their game more than the topical clubs.

I set myself goal to buy new stuff. If I shave 3 or 4 off my ave, later I'll reward myself with that driver.
PGA pro Paul Goydos said it best- "30 handicappers should buy $200 clubs and $800 worth of lessons". Honestly, that applies to everyone, except scratch players or better. And yes, I include myself contained by that category- i need lessons, and I be dumb enough to think it be the clubs fault, not mine.
People have be pushed with "The longest, straightest <insert brand/club>... EVER" bulls#it for a good number of years. Mostly, it's plain marketing. There are some technology jump, to be sure, but not enough to keep pushing alike thing in a different box. People talk about "sweet spots", or "we hold the largest (or in Cobra's S9-1, nine of them) sweet spots. Based on physics, that's impossible. The sweet spot is a point where the lines of the horizontal and vertical centers geometrically intersect. It's something like the size of a pinpoint. It can never physically get bigger. That is where Moment of Inertia (MOI) comes within. That measures forgiveness, and cannot exceed 5,900 g/cm2. The trampoline affect, or coefficient of restitution (COR) cannot exceed 0.83 (if a ball is thrown at a clubface at 100 mph, it cannot bounce back faster than 83 mph). These variables are maxed out, especially contained by the square-shaped drivers. So how do these things really improve, especially year after year?
They don't. Sure, the high MOI WILL sustain with forgiveness (as in, the square shapes turn your slices/hooks into pushes/pulls), but that's going on for it. What happens on a bad daylight? You still play poorly.
How do things get better? Get lessons. Get fit by a clubfitter. The clubs won't accumulate your game, but when you get YOU swinging right and making dutiful contact, your score will definitely drop.
Anonymity. You can buy any club under the sun in need putting your game on display, but getting a lesson requires being humble adequate to show someone you don't know how bad you really are.
Ultimately, most golfers are more worried about how they look than how they play.
Amen! As an golf pro and an instructor, I know exactly what you're talking about. I have an idea that we all find something different in this team game that we love. For many people, its the toys that they love. I find, and this is interesting - on the increase isn't at the top of many golfers agenda. It sounds silly but its true. And I guess I have no problem beside that. The idea is to have fun and this winter sport doesn't get more enjoyable as you go and get better. I'm 4 strokes better than scratch and I'll promise you golf isn't more fun for me than it is for the average 15 handicapper.

One word: PRIDE
You can't "show-off" a brand topical golf lesson like you can the a new driver... until you hit the bright driver OB and a lesson you'd be using your old driver hitting it dead nuts down the fairway...
That is the request for information of the century. I suspect a lot of it is ego (thinking they don't need lessons), some is pride (not wanting to acknowledge they need the lessons), and a lot is time (it take a flexible schedule and dedication to maximize the benefit derived from lessons through practice on the range).
I believe most citizens would be better off with a moderately priced set of sticks and $500 worth of module rather than $1,500 sticks and no lessons. But, in attendance is no conspicuous consumption advantage to lessons; not a soul sees those but the recipient.
When friends report me they are considering taking up golf, I always suggest that they borrow a set of clubs and take programme before doing anything else. Then, they can buy some clubs if they decide they want to hold on to at it.
Isn't it amazing that tour pros contact their swing coach almost weekly and amateurs don't think they need any programme? Maybe it's just a matter of individuals not knowing how much they don't know.
Cause they have loss prevention on the credit card and catch all their pro-v1 golf balls for free ( afterwards claim them lost to American express)
What a wonderful question! New clubs will do very little to promote anyone's game if the player doesn't have the makeshift mechanical swing technique. I wasted tons, many years when I learned from my father who, bless his soul, qualified me from what he learned himself. I gave up the winter sport after a long time of frustration. I saw a sign for instructions at a driving range and from there, adjectives the lights turned on. It still took a long time to rid myself of the bad habits that be ingrained into my muscle memory. My old clubs were totally deficient so I spent $1,800.00 on a new set. I've thoroughly enjoyed the spectator sport since those lessons and my new clubs hold made all the difference. I would always recommend, keep your old clubs and past you buy new clubs, take a series of curriculum from a pro who will work with your swing, not try to teach you a together new swing!
