Need training and equipment tips for a kilimanjaro climb?
me and a friend are planning a trip to tanzania to climb kilimanjaro next year, any tips or advice on training technique and equipment we wil need or could benefit from would be much appreciated

The best conditioning for a long non-technical climb like this is stair climbing, especially wearing a pack beside 20 to 25 pounds in it. You can do StairMaster but actual flights of stairs are better. I used to do that for he last few months back a mountaineering trip and it made a huge difference. I would climb 40 stories in the University of Pittsburgh Cathedral of Learning, 3 times in a row (total of 240 flights) and walk briskly in place in the elevator contained by between the trips. I could do it in 45 minutes, and would repeat it 3 times a week. It really helped me know how to climb steep slopes without fatigue or leg cramps on my trips.
I have 3 friends climb Kilimanjaro second summer. All they did to prepare was do hikes locally with a large pack. Their packs were lighter when they in reality climbed Kili. so it didnt have any effect on them.
One thing they recommend though is to bring a surgical covering or a dust mask for when you stay in the settlement before the hike. All 3 developed respiratory infections from staying contained by the dusty, dirty, pretty much unsanitary village. It almost cost them the climb. It just took them longer to do it.
The routes up Kili are flowing, locals carry tables and coolers up the mountain and try to go you coca cola on the trail and at the summit. Its known as the cola route. They even carried a birthday cake to the summit to suprise my friend, the locals carried it up because they were climbing on her birthday. Source(s): Eagle Scout
