Where can I find cheap backpacking equipment?

Some friends and I are trying to put together a backpacking trip for the first time. I was just wondering if anyone know of somewhere I could get some stuff cheap I don't want to spend a whole lot.

might luck up at a garage public sale
check bulletin board at local gear shop - they might have rental stuff they would sell cheap - or you might want to rent gear until you see if you approaching it
some gear is on Craig's List
Walmart has some decent stuff for getting started contained by mild weather but I don't remember their carrying any decent packs
you can use a cheap plastic tarp instead of a tent

i guess you could go to a wal-mart supercenter. purely look in the sporting goods division.
Walmart does have some decent items for a mart price.
But you get what you pay for.
so cheap isnt the best opening to go.
