As for the gear, all you really inevitability is the software and a decent PC (+ audiocard, don't use the standard onboard Realtek soundcard or something, go for a clothed audio card that supports ASIO) and you're good to go. Over time I've invested contained by some good headphones, monitor speakers and a nice MIDI controller, but you don't requirement that to get started.
