If you're really interested within photography, I'd look into getting an SLR at some point. You can find entry level SLR's for around $600 with a lens. Even beside the kit lens, you'll see major transformation in your photos.

There are many differences between a point and shoot and SLR cameras. Two of the biggest are the sensor size and the lens. Sensors contained by SLR cameras are much larger than sensors in P&S cameras so photos aren't as compressed when they're processed.

SLR's will allow you to shoot with a superior "DPI" or dots per inch. This will improve the printed image greatly.

As far as candid shots, I close to to find a place where I won't be noticed and use a zoom lens to lock in people at events and stuff. Another option is erudition how to "shoot from the hip". Instead of looking at your camera's screen or through the view finder, you freshly hit the shutter while its still in a relaxed position.
