It depends on where it's coming from. For our forward deployed forces contained by Europe and the Pacific, transferring equipment back to CONUS (Continental US) is relatively simple and done rather habitually. It all depends on the cost benefit of shipping it. If the particular piece of equipment is non-operational or worn out, it will most likely be discarded. But more modern and expensive things will obviously be transferred. In a warzone, equipment is discarded ALOT more recurrently, sometimes even left behind for convenience sake. Right very soon their are literally tons of discarded equipment all over Afghanistan and Iraq right now. But for the more prized things, they will be reconditioned, repaired, and brought back to the US.
