I am an individual child and I have been skating since I be 9. I am now 21 and my mom said that she used to have to budget for 2 children. Me self one and skating being the second. Skating is not cheap, but what you get out of it is priceless. My rink be open 6 months out of the year. On average we paid around 2500 for lessons, 600 for skates, 600 for ice time, 1000 for travel to competitions (includes food, hotel gas), 250 for cometition fees (we merely did 1 or 2 because our season was so short) The summer was my "bad season". I would have to drive an hour to skate. And I did a 2 week "training camp" which itself cost about 1500-2000 for a stay away military camp including transportation, lessons, ice time, room and board, food and a few excursions.

I practically lived at my rime rink, so that may be on the high end of things. I loved it. I skated contained by college too.
22,000 for an intermediate skater
It depends on what level you're at. Beginners pay skating group lesson fees, fees for the numeral skates, and any public skate additional sessions. I'd say that would come out to no more than $500 a year.

On the other cessation of the spectrum, one of the boys at my rink who's going to be competing at nationals in January at the junior plane has a family who forks over $50-60K a year. He get new boots (custom) twice a year, has at tiniest one lesson a day, skate 3 sessions a day (one of which is bought privately from the rink so he can skate on his own which is $230/hour), have multiple off-ice training sessions a week, competes internationally (so he pays coaching fees, airplane tickets, and hotel rooms in additional to his own), have beautiful but expensive costumes and professionally-done music cutting. The catalogue goes on. He's also a gorgeous skater with adjectives of his triples (sans triple axel), so apparently the money seems to have compensated off.

On top of this massive financial commitment a parent must make, there's also a huge time commitment. Up until lately, this boy couldn't drive himself to the rink, so his mother did it every day. She also volunteers with the club, and if you can believe it, he have an older sister who used to skate, as well (although I scarcely think they were paying as much money for her to skate, as she wasn't up to his level).

The above poster is right, while our parents may enjoy the money to spend, are they willing to do it? My parents had the money, but they predetermined me to 3 lessons a week, despite my skating 15-18 hours a week on the ice. They didn't put the money surrounded by like this boy's family did, but it be also easier for them to handle when I decided to quit (of course, in a minute I'm back again and paying on my own this time and can't even afford 1 lesson a week, so I'm now VERY appreciative of what I get when my parents were paying. :)
The real quiz is are they willing to?

But even if you can afford it and your family is inclined to pay it are you going to work hard? You can throw adjectives the money in the world at something but that wont get you totally far.

When my daughter first started almost six years ago we only had three classes a year and it be nothing.

Then she should a love for it and we choose to stand behind her as long as she be willing to lead.

Right very soon we pay about $5000.00 a year.

That includes four to six classes, private coach three times a week, rime time four times a week, new skates about once a year, skate dresses, travel to competition, clinics where on earth visiting coaches teach special sessions... and you what I expect that number might be a little low... I just thought of club dues, adjectives the little things like tights and gloves, gas to get to the rink... and on and on...

And the point of it is she is really young still! As she gets elder and higher this will just bring back more and more. I am sure there are far higher numbers out within...

But I want you to realize is that this about hard work and her love of this crazy sport above adjectives else and not the money. You are blessed to not have to have a horror that your family will someday have to explain to you this or that is too much so never loss sight of what a contribution that is.

God Bless you if you want to skate and welcome to a stange world!
I would suggest you may want to try group lessons at first to see if this is something that you really want to do. You also will want to see what coaches are available for private module as they all teach impossible to tell apart stuff but technique, attitude and commitment is different with each. Some coaches are strict and some are more relaxed, you obligation to find the right fit. Also comfort level is important beside the other skaters as this a very highly competitive sport. If you enjoy the support of your family that is partially the battle. It takes time away from home for competitions, discipline and a strong desire to be on the rime. There is also off ice training, and if your surrounded by school you will need to use this as an alternative to a P.E. class. Some school allow this and others don't. Be aware of what all goes into the enthusiasm of a figure skater.
