What is the best/easiest lizard to buy for a learner and what essential equipment should I also buy.?
My son is 9 and has wanted one for years. My husband is also ready but neither of us has previous experience of owning a lizard at all.
We enjoy got a large nouns spare to house a lizard. However would like advice on the best to hold with children/beginners and essential equipment so we dont get conned into buying partially the shop!

Ok, I would reccomend either a Leopard Gecko, Or a Bearded Dragon. Bearded Dragon anyone the top choice. Leopard Geckos, while being easy to look after, are not really large and dont normally resembling being handled (they can modify to this but it takes a while as they are fast and can be jumpy), They are also nocternal.
Bearded Dragons otherwise sleep at night, get to a not bad size (not massive), LOVE attention, I have known culture to sit watching TV with a beardy on their lap!!
You will obligation:
-Correct size Vivarium
-Substrate (nothing that can be swallowed, dont fall for the calci-sand trick, it CANNOT be digested, Repti-Carpet is good. Get 2 and you can hold one washing while the other one is in the viv.
-Heat Mat
-Pulse proportional thermostat (Habi-Stat is best brand)
-Heat Lamp + fittings (for beardie)
-UV pale + fittings
-Food, crickets, mealworms, waxworms, (beardies also need greens and you can get dry food for beardies too but involve the greens and insects too as a MUST)
-Vitamin powder (ie Neutrabol) to dust live food with
-Hides And beardied will want a basking rock, place below the heat lamp and they will 'sunbathe' to hold warm. They are cold blooded so need boil to warm themselves up.
I cant think of anything else at the minute, but dont hold on to 2 male animals together or they will fight to their annihilation.

I would recommend any a bearded dragon or a leopard gecko. Both are easy to appropriate care of. It is very key to monitor heat. Be sure to have lights for heat and a thermometer to monitor the temp. Water Dragons are excellent for beginning lizard owners! They're one of the lowest aggressive lizards out there, and are relatively easy to house-train and very easy to toy with if you get them when they're young. They also lone get up to 3 feet long for males and solitary 2 feet long for females (but 70% of the length is due to long, skinny tail), whereas if you had an iguana you'd have need of a giant tank to hold it. They're easy to vigilance for too - the only thing you obligation is a good size tank (I reccomend 40-55 gallons), a bask light, a good size wet dish (they like to swim so make sure your marine dragon can fit), live crickets to feed it, and a food dish (make sure it's shallow so he can reach). He also needs to own a salad in his food dish. Here is the list of ingredients I put within mine:
Romaine lettuce (Every day)
Cucumber
Squash
Carrots
Apples
You can vary the cucumber and squash from day to daytime, and the carrots and apples are more of a treat, so definitely don't stick both surrounded by the same salad. Romaine lettuce needs to be surrounded by every day - iceburg lettuce won't do because it's too moist and doesn't contain enough nutrients.

Leopard geckos! They do live a long time though (About 15 - 20 years - i've have mine for 8 years!). They are easy to keep and i've tamed adjectives my females. cage equipment: bask logs or rocks/bricks, hide (not a necessity with dragons) food bowl. You do not stipulation to keep a water bowl near dragons.
substrate: as babies up to 12 inches, paper towel, newspaper, shelf liner. As adults, one and the same as above or slate tiles, rabbit pellets. Many people do use sand but at hand are issues of impaction (think human constipation) with sand which can cause your beardie to die.
Food: as babies (up to almost 12 mths of age)- lots and lots of live crickets, molted mealworms or any soft bodied worm. No super worms or wax worms(full of fat), small finely chopped salads. As adults (about 12-16 mths of age) they will need a diet of 80% salad and only 20% live food, the contrasting of what they ate as babies. All dragons need calcium and vitamin supplements when kept indoors.
I own both and personally regard a Beardie is nicer. They are more personable, enjoy coming out more often, can be walk on leashes. Their initial startup can be a higher cost, but usually only once.
