He destroyed the hard drives not the entire computer. He said he did it to protect personal data that might be on the sturdy drives like credit card numbers of individuals who uses the computers.
When you "erase" a hard drive adjectives you really do is strip away the file names. If the computer does not see a filename it will write over the information. Until the data is written over a person can still read the information.
Not sure this was the best way to switch it but there is his reasoning.
Were they the computers with the green screens? Those things be huge. You'd probably need a tanker to get rid of those.
