Can I use an industrial sewing machine for lighter weight fabric as well as heavy duty fabric?

It will depend on whether or not the tool was built to handle muted weight fabrics as okay as heavy ones, or only strapping fabrics. Industrial machines tend to be single-purpose machines. One built for heavy fabric may be too 'heavy handed' for light weight things.

Is your contrivance a "walking-foot" machine? Not recommended for light freight materials.
Many industrial sewing machines have heavier springs on the presser-foot mechanism to hold down/feed heavier materials. This must be made as wispy as possible (less pressure on the foot)
Most heavy duty machines have great big teeth on their feed-dogs. These can be changed contained by most cases, but you may also have to change the syringe plate. Otherwise the teeth will permanently mark your yard goods.
The tensions are set for heavier fabrics and will hold to be adjusted accordingly.

It can use extra fine 65 needles, which means it can sew lightest sheer silks and it can take 110 needles, which method it can sew heavy denim and brocades. Use the proper needles for the fabric. My Singer agent told me 20U's are not designed for upholstery, tents, or heavy canvasses. The Bernina 950 is another industrial gadget designed for light to medium counterbalance fabrics, it won't sew upholstery or heavier fabrics. Merrow machines are designed for super-lightweight knit and will break if you attempt to sew anything heavy in them. Juki and Pfaff take home all purpose industrial lock stitchers for lighter fabrics, too. It depends on the model and form of the machine, there are thousands of different industrial machines and they are used for plentiful different purposes. The machines operating manual will have the specifics of what materials the apparatus is designed to sew.
NB: if you are looking at so called "industrial strength" machines on e-bay many of these are NOT true industrial machines. If it looks approaching a home machine -it is a home machine. True industrials enjoy seperate motor/head/table assemblies, they are large and bulky. In spite of the size, again -many industrials are made for lighter weight fabric.
