Conversion of 1HP 3phase lathe motor to single phase 240V?
I wish to convert my Colchester Bantam motor and
switchgear from 3 phase 415V to single phase 240V. I am looking for a supplier to supply what I need, any guidance would be appreciated. I must retain the forward/reverse capability of the motor. The current 3 phase motor code is -Type BK2412G B56. Do I need a capacitor start/run motor?

You have two workable option. Either change the motor for a single phase one or get a singlephase to 3-phase transformer. Connect the 3-phase side to your lathe motor and the single phase side to your single phase supply. Make sure that the transformer is of average rating (big enough). Best, and probably cheapest option is to just silver the motor and buy a new on/off/reversing switch to go next to it.

I would give up your job your motor alone and take the opportunity to go to erratic electronic spped control. A three phase inverter is what I'd use. It retains all the touque and they provide really smooth running from near nil to full speed. Something like an IMO Jaguar Cub is a good continuum. For 1HP somthing like a CUB5A-1 might be for you. You can still use your external forward/reverse switch and will need to mount a potentiometer somewhere for speed control.
You'll also need a moment or two knowledge in navigate through the options on the controller, its a little dunting but mostly the failure to pay options will do.

That's adjectives you need, a start capacitor and a little electrical system knowledge... alternatively you can by an AC drive, 3ph in single out.
I would gain the yellow pages and find your nearest rework agent, they will hold anything you need...
