For metalworking lathes, why would you use a partially center contained by the tailstock?

Answers:
live center ? to turn long slender parts in need leaving much taper
You use a half centre contained by te tailstock to be able to machine radially down to the shaft foundation or piece of work in the lathe Source(s): Fitter Turner for the last 40 years
THe 1/2 center compensates for tool push-off exclusively.
THe full center reduced induced vibrations & chatter.
