Is it ok that I bring a bunch of sparks while turning down 5250 carbon steel w/ a carbide cutter on a lathe?

Ok I am taking off about .080-.090" respectively pass and I am running at 1250 RPM and turning down 5150 carbon steel that was roast treated with a carbide insert cutter.
Answers:
No, you should never see sparks during a cuttng operation, only grinding. You are generate too much heat. For the hard steel you are turning, you involve to reduce your cut, 0.080-0.090 is a really heavy cut for most steels. At that cut depth, 1250 rpm is track too fast. You need to cut subsidise both the depth and the speed. Both seem very glorious. Check out Machinery's Handbook or a similar reference for feed & speed of 5250. Also check your tool angles, especially the nouns. Proper tool angles can work wonders. You may well be rubbing after the cut. Finally, make sure you own a cutting fluid made for such hard steel.
your DOC i devise is fine you should run constant surface speed cancel with the right surface speed and your RPM's will adjust automatically by the diameter you are adjectives also are you running any coolant or dry that could be whats causing the sparks.
no too fast cut rpms to 800,
.010 cut
The finish you are getting is due to the rubbing of your cutter.
Your RPM's are probably too big.
What is the diameter?
If your part is over 50 Rc you should consider using ceramic if it is not an interrupted cut.
Also your carbide position makes a big difference too, as well as coating on the carbide.
All that considered slow your RPM, use a depth of cut 10-15% bigger than the radius of the carbide and cut next to a negative angle.
Good luck. Source(s): Own a CNC Machine Shop
