Bert had it right.
Lathe chisels have long strong handle to give you
the proper leverage for safety.
If you didn't know this, I most strongly push for you to get
some training before you mess beside a wood lathe.
They're safe enough if you know what you're
give or take a few, but they can really bite those who don't.
Wood turning chisels. The main ones being a gouge, a skew, a departure tool, and a scraper. There are gazillion varieties of each, as ably as many other specialized chisels. If you get into woodturning, expect to payment more money for tooling than the lathe itself cost. Along with the chisels, a good grinder for sharpening is a must as you sharpen regularly to keep a good turn-up. sorry I started getting long winded.
They are called lathe chisels and come in a cavernous variety of sizes and shapes.

A Skill Saw will work, but it's a little overkill. Try a Hack Saw. Source(s): Sorry! I thought you meant a wood lath (a skeletal piece of wood)!
