Are "Smithy" 3 within 1 mill/lathe machines of pious characteristic?
They seem to be about equal price as overseas 3 in 1 machines, but I've found that the imported machines are not high-ranking quality machines. I'm thinking about getting the Midas 1220. Any thoughts?

I be interested in buying one of these, so I did quite a bit of research. I found lots of network sites and discussions describing ways to improve the machine or to repair the things that didn't work or to fix the things that broke. The broad opinion seemed to be that it be adequate for general purpose work, but the tolerances are not flawless enough for truly accurate machining of critical parts.
If you are planning on working on only small items, you might look at the Sherline machines (http://www.sherline.com/). That is what I terminated up with.

I enjoy a friend that has a Smithy he's been using for over 20 years and never have had any problems with it. With run of the mill maintenance these things last forever.
Smithy machines are particularly good quality. However, any 3 surrounded by 1 machine is a compromise over three separate machines. I've used several of Smithy's products, and found them to be great. If you're going into production of something, like on a commercial horizontal, they may come up short, but for general purposes, and short -run stuff, smaller sizes, you won't likely be dissatisfied near Smithy.
I haven't seen any imports within that price range that had the smoothness of operation Smithy does, or the dimensions to hold tight tolerances very well.
