How do you find the exact center of a round workpeice? For attaching to a lathe.?

I got pretty close by measuring and drawing an x through the log but it is not unresponsive on which causes some serious wobbling as you can imagine. I am BRAND New on the lathe and simply know what I have read about. So not singular would it be close to impossible to work on it like this, it seems to me it is not perfect for my machine. Feels like the complete thing is going to fly apart. It gets a short time better at higher speeds but I am scared for my expensive equipment's sanctuary, not to mention mine if things do start coming apart.
GO SLOW . you did not say if the log was close to round or not. so i will assume it is round and close to symmetrical. set you tool guide exactly parallel beside the lathe. then move it close to the log and rotate the log by hand. as it spins you will see the perforation between the log and the guide open and close. This will tell you which completion needs adjustment and about how much. once you take it close enough to satisfy you. move the guide as close as you can . start the lathe slow, next to a very sharp tool start peeling the log , you will one and only be hitting the high spot; take that down a bit. stop the lathe move the guide in closer and repeat. soon you will have knock off high bit and it will be more in balance and you can increase the rpm.
i have turned some peculiar shaped logs on mine and all you can do is get close hand over it a spin and adjust it till you get the least amount of wobble...you want to start slow tho...increase your speed as it get round...
"> Daniel,

About the best way to do this is to draw a straight line down thru the circle on the bring to a close of the workpiece. Next, measure half-way point and mark the spot. Then queue up a right angle square on the line drawn straight down the end of the work-piece. Set the 90 point perpendicular part of the square so it's on the half-way easy target. Extend the line all the means of access across the work-piece so that you a full perpendicular line that intersects at the middle. That should indicate where on earth the exact center point is located.
