Turning bowls on a lathe?
I would like to start turning bowls on a lathe. What do I need to grasp started?

good chisels is probably the most important , along next to your different face plates and chucks...there are lots of dvd's on the subject and it is much better watching it than reading it contained by a book...i have both...still learning but i own done some nice bowls...
Aside from a lathe , just a few paraphernalia & special tools.
Faceplates are generally used to hold the work .
A curved bowl turning tool rest to allow for better reach inside the wokpiece.
Bowl turning tools allow for boring & scrape inside & outside contours.
A large pair if calipers to control solidity of the bowl sides.
There are special bowl turning lathes that have no dead center & much greater than average "swing" to allow turning of large diameter pieces.
Have turned small cups/ bowls etc on a 6"lathe w/ regular tools but w/ the bowl accessories would enjoy been better & quicker.
One thing that is a big sustain is a bandsaw to rough cut large blocks.
The other thing is a supply of blocks of any size that will turn very well & not split.
Have heard that "burl" wood in most species does not split .
Got to be specialty sites for tools & tips.
