Basic lathe problem - anyone?

i am not getting my stock material inserted centrally. How can one put a piec of material within to be exactly centre.

this is a manual lathe. I insert the piece and hit it until it the gap between the material end. I am left with a crevice of about 1-2mm. when i run the lathe the cutting tool should cut the circumfurence equally and consistently when i purely touch the material. this is the best method of checking if in certainty it rally is centered. Need tips .thanks surrounded by adv.....ance

You need a 4 jaw chuck. Run a dial experiment indicator against the outside of the job, and tighten the jaws two at a time until the tdi shows no motion as you rotate the chuck. You can easily win it within a mil or so by this technique.
