If you own a lathe you can answer this?
Ok long story as short as i can make it. i have a 3/8" iron rod cut into 1" length and i have to drill a 8mm hole in it deceased center the whole way through them. ""it's for tattoo device coil cores cause i know your wondering" I have a drillpress but cant eye them up plus i own to make many of them everyone within the trade says they use a lathe to do this. i found a few ones a 12" craftsman but they all read aloud wood lathes is there a difference in a metal lathe and a wood one? or are they using a wood one to do it. near a chuck on one end with the 8mm drill bit contained by it and the 3/8 rod in the other i'm totally guessing here cause i own no idea i'm hoping for some info on lathes that will help. Wood and metal lathes are two different items. After you cut the material to length you should contrivance it smooth.
drill press is your best bet if you can't set it up beside a drill press you certainly won't be able to do it near a lathe but yes you can use a wood lathe for this purpose just use a metal bit for it
Ask at a contraption shop,they may be able to do it for you.They may have some available.
i own a lathe and i would never attempt to do metal work on it...i dont think my wood lathe will spin slow enough to do metal work for one item... go to a machine shop...
I would not feel you could be very accurate with trying to bore holes next to a wood lathe, or drill press, even with a vice bolted down,, Find someone with a metal lathe, or milling piece of equipment, if the parts were the right diameter you could bore holes pretty well on a mill, and if set up right pretty upright on a lathe, depending on how long the parts are you have to make sure it does not wobble around at adjectives when you try to bore on the lathe, I have pieces on my lathe that bolts to the bed way and have 3 special "fingers" that I adjust out to keep the center of work in place or the pause when trying to bore, a good vice on a mill will hold things pretty good, much better than the average one on a drill press...
Big difference between wood and metal working machines. I hold an atlas 12x48 metal lathe, and a 4 thousand pound Cincinnati mill that I use a lot to make parts for infirm farm equipment..
