What do I obligation to look for contained by a lathe chuck?

I just got a lathe. I've used one in the past in my school shop, but I never needed to buy a chuck for it. And, I don't really know much at adjectives about it. I've looked online, and I found one for about 35 dollars, but I'm not sure if I should buy it. It say it's a 6" 4-Jaw Independent Chuck, and it said that it didn't include an adapter plate. It also didn't say anything about a knob (I saw some with one included). Do I need an adapter plate? Or a push button? Will it even fit my lathe?

I'm kinda lost.

Wood lathe or metal lathe? What brand? What does the spindle look like on your lathe? Measure the diameter of the shaft and if there are any threads and the pitch of them. Look close and inspect your lathe for any information plate on it.
I'm currently fixing a hobby lathe that needed a motor and a complete rework to be usable. Quite an background since it was basically a set of rail and some tool holders a drive pulley and chuck and a tail stock. It will take some looking to put it in use. If I remember right, a 4 chin chuck does need a key and respectively jaw moves separately. Hope this helps. Source(s): GIGO
