I can't remove the chuck from my wood lathe!?

I recently bought an Enco 1993 1/2 horsepower wood lathe used off of craigslist. It works great and sounds polite. Only issue is I can't remove the chuck from the spindle. I have taken it completely apart and back together. There is no bit of a mechanism to lock the spindle to get the chuck sour. How are you supposed to do it? I need it off because within order for me to spin something, I have to tack hammer the chuck into the wood to get a snug fit right? then put the chuck stern on and put on the wood. I can't seem to find any place that sells elder chucks like mine.
