Do you other obligation a metal and nonmetal to form a compound?

In this packet for my science class it said that it takes a metal and nonmetal to form a compound...but Oxygen and Hydrogen are obviously NOT metals...so ?

ionic compound = metal + nonmetal
molecular compound = nonmetal + nonmetal

Compounds can be formed between metals and nonmetals, between two nonmetals, and also between two (or more) metals.

The latter type are call intermetallic compounds. An example is copper aluminide, which is present in 2000-series heat-treatable aluminum alloys. There are countless others.
