Death Metal bassists, what equipment and technique do you use and why?
Answers:
i would recommend watching videos of tony choy (atheist) or alex webster (cannibal corpse) as far as technique, and neither use a pick but are both extremely rapid and technical. The equipment aspect depends on what sound you're going for.
I find most death metal bassists use a pick. For the barefaced reason that you can play faster, it probably gives you a better tone for destruction metal too, because death metal usually isn't described as "smooth".
I use my Peavey Fury 5 string bass, which was made with a shorter nouns and the strings closer to the fretboard. Since my hands are smaller, this works out very okay plus the closer strings allow for amazing speed and ease of play. I use a Behringer amp (180 watt) because I like have the ability to mess with the settings to find any sound I want. It even allows for distortion, which is awesome for playing Anesthesia by Metallica.
As far as techniques step, I use fingerpicking for the speed and wider variety of play it allows. For some reason I lose respect for a bassist if they use a pick. I guess it's simply been ingrained in me that valid bassists don't use picks. I also use some slap and pop techniques, but not many as I'm not particularly good at it yet. I'm constantly inquiring for different techniques too.
bass guitars (for open reasons) amps (also obvious) and other obvious things (cables strings) but bassists dont use picks they always finger strum for a smooth nouns and also the strings are to thick to pick easily
