Subs are used for delicate jobs that require a human presence surrounded by deep water beyond where on earth a diver can work. This can include retrieval missions, inspection and videography work, observation, etc.

Other equipment will be specific to the goals of the experimental staff on board for that cruise, or to the specific mission of the ship. This will include water sampling and collection equipment, biological experiment equipment, sediment sampling and analysis equipment, imaging systems that can penetrate the seafloor, measure dampen current, biological activity, etc...
