Why do they use the word "Elliptical" to describe the gym equipment?

I looked up the definition of "elliptical" and it has to do with vocalizations and or geometry..... Where did they get the name for the exercise equipment that is to say called elliptical? Why that word?

because as the gadget is used the feet trace an elipse, ie undergo eliptical motion, hence eliptical trainer
because the movement it goes in is egg-shaped....
