What is the best equipment to use to write your own music?

What is the ideal equipment to write music that most successful solo artist use today. Would love to hear from music artists as well as producers. Besides Fruity loops, what other computer music software would you recommend? To include keyboards, software, and suggestion whether to use mac or windows.

Apple computers has a complete packet that includes keyboard, computer and software... it's a bit pricy... but it works great.
get a mac. they're more built for musical productions, as window I think is just a broad business type of computer.

also, get reason 3.0. it costs roughly speaking $400, but it's better than buying a studio for $10,000.
