If i enjoy rockband1 for ps2 and i buy rockband 2 for ps2 but i one and only use the rockband1 equipment can i play rb2?

If i have rockband1 for ps2 and i buy rockband 2 for ps2 but i only use the rockband1 equipment can i play rb2? but i dont hold the rock band 2 equipment at all and i stipulation to know before i buy the rockband2 game.
