What is the ascendancy to using a terracotta fuse within electronic equipment as opposing a chalice fuse?
I opened a control box for a boiler and found that the 125vac to 24dc transformer had a terracotta fuse. I was curious as to its attributes and differences from glass fuses.
Answers:
More rugged for one...can stand steam better than glass.
Ceramic fuses are used for their ability to withstand ambient temperature and pressure. Where the cup envelope of a glass fuse might be weakened by any temperature or pressure in some environments, ceramics can withstand these physical conditions better.
While cup fuses have the advantage of a fuse part visible for inspection purposes, they have a low breaking dimensions which generally restricts them to applications of 15 A or less at 250 VAC. Ceramic fuses enjoy the advantage of a higher breaking dimensions facilitating their use in sophisticated voltage/ampere circuits. Filling a fuse body with sand provides additional protection against arcing surrounded by an overcurrent situation.
